This is a première. Not for the current Cannes Film festival, but for myself. The first piece of furniture in walnut. And which one. I found superb walnut stock at a sawmill almost in my backyard. 25 inches wide, and a superb grain. To add to my luck, I had repaired the XXL wide belt sander at the AOB workshop a few months back, because this was not a standard-width planing job.
The terms of reference (which I drafted personally) called for preferably aluminum legs. That left me the challenge of attaching such legs to a wooden tabletop. After checking out aluminum corner profiles and complicated constructions, Jean-Claude at the local ironmonger shop Quincaillerie Tarnaise suggested the golden tip – to attach a thinner corner profile to wooden legs. Et voilà.
The legs where attached to the table tops with pocket screws, and the aluminum corner profiles were glued to the legs (with Titebond II) as a very last step, after finishing all the rest. The table top for the two tables was first sealed with shellac, then dyed, and then a succession of five layers of shellac and polyurethane satin varnish, lightly sanded in between. And a final touch of wax.
Dimensions are approx. 21 x 21 x 16 in.
